Restrictions, however, remain in place for A2 countries, namely Bulgarian and Romanian nationals. Also, on 9 May 2011 the UK Government abolished the requirement to obtain a Certificate of Approval before marrying or enteringa civil partnership in the UK. This hasnot affected the eligibility criteria to be met for an entry clearanceapplication as a fiancйe/proposed civil partner or spouse/ civil partner. In particular, applicants for settlement will need to meet a new criminality threshold and anew income requirement to claim 75 points asTier 1 General holders or by showing the appropriate salary as work permit holders and Tier 2applicants in line with the UKBA Codes of Practice.Finally, the UK Border Agency has also announced the following proposals:• re-branding Tier 2 (the skilled worker route) as temporary, ending the assumption that settlement will be available for those who enter on this route;• allowing certain categories of Tier 2 migrant, for example those earning over Ј150,000 or occupations of a specific economic or social value to the UK, to retain an automatic route to settlement;• creating a new category into which, after three years in the UK, the most exceptional Tier 2 migrants may switch and go on to apply for settlement;• allowing Tier 2 migrants who do not switch into a settlement route to stay for a maximum of five years with the expectation that they and any dependants will leave at the end of that time;• introducing an English language requirement for adult dependants of Tier 2 migrants applying to switch into a route to settlement;• restricting the maximum period of leave for Tier 5 Temporary Workers to 12 months; and• closing or reforming routes for overseas domestic workers.Again, it appears that the UK Government’s focus is to attract thosemigrants who might be able to to create wealth for the UK economy by shortening their qualifying period for settlement, while making it tougher for other migrants, in particular low skilled/low salary migrants byrebranding them as temporary workers in the UK.

With just three days to go the excitement is building as the nation prepares itself for the next instalment of anticipation followed by almost certain underachievement from the “Golden Generation” of England footballers. Whether it is at the end of the group stage (unlikely), the last sixteen (possible), the quarter finals (likely) or beyond, the England Football Team will return home, sore, bruised and full of excuses. But with Fabio Capello at the helm surely England will avoid the ignominy of the penalty shoot out or the consequences of Wayne Rooney’s dismissal for a moment of Latin inspired madness? How well will England do and what are the team’s chances this time (more than any time)? With my crystal ball in tow this is what actually happens at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa……… England have been given a favourable draw: – no English player should be fearful of Rene Krhin (Slovenia), the “never say die attitude” of Rafik Djebbour (Algeria) or the silky skills of Carlos Bocanegra (USA). England end up as group winners where they face a last sixteen encounter with (on no) GERMANY! And this is where their campaign ignites. Germany have one of the best records of all the recognised footballing nations and England have one of the worst! But this is not a vintage German side and they lost their talisman, Michael Ballack, in one of the earlier warm up fixtures. The Germans still possess talent (you never write off the Germans!) and their team contains several world class performers with the likes of Bastien Schweinsteiger, Phillip Lahm and Miroslav Klose on show. But from the comfort of my sofa, with feet outstretched on my footstool and with beer in hand the Germans are mastered and England beat them:- in a penalty shootout! So who do England face in the quarter final? It turns out to be the pesky Uruguayans and their prolific goal machine (and Manchester United flop), Diego Forlan. But Uruguay can not rely on just one man and they do not have the strength in depth that the top teams need to compete at this level. Diego may be one of the finest goal poachers for Athletico Madrid in La Liga but in the World Cup Quarter Final against England, Ledley King “has him in his pocket” and the striker proves completely ineffectual. The Three Lions win the game when Emile Heskey scores his eighth ever England goal in a tight and nervous encounter. The World Cup Semi Final sees the stylish Dutch take on the ever improving English in what turns out to be a classic World Cup fixture. Van Bommel scores early for Holland whilst England reply when Joe Cole conjurers up a bit of magic and lobs Van der Saar from outside the box. Then England take the lead when Crouch heads in from close range only for the outstanding Wesley Sneijder to equalise just before half time. The second half remains goalless and extra time is looming when Gareth Barry scores his second ever England goal to take his team towards the final. With seconds to go and every Englishmen down to his last millimetre of bite able fingernail, Robin van Persie is tripped in the penalty area by the hapless John Terry…PENALTY!!! Van Persie himself steps up to take the spot kick and instead of placing his shot, he blasts the ball inches wide of Joe Hart’s left hand post! The referee looks at his watch, blows and England are in their first World Cup Final since 1966! Utter pandemonium as the nation celebrates in joyous unison (and all thoughts of the recent Tory / Lib Dem budget massacre are banished until another day!) England play Spain in the final and are beaten by four goals to nil.

England rugby team former skipper Steve Borthwick was dropped on Thursday by manager Martin Johnson from the final 32 men’s team. Borthwick was Johnson’s first choice as skipper for the first 20 tests but was later dropped down after he suffered a knee injury. The injury resulted in missing him the match against France at Six Nations final. In his absence the team will include players like Tom Palmer, Dave Attwood, Courtney Lawes and veteran Simon Shaw. For Johnson it was a hard decision to leave such a talented player out of the team and he regretted the decision very much. Borthwick has been playing for England for a long time and had helped them in some tight spots. The former skipper after the decision felt very depressed but is still confident that he can jump back in the team with his good performance. Borthwick at present will be playing at England Saxon’s squad along with other players from the elite squad. The Saxon squad will hold players like wing Ugo Monye, lock Louis Deacon, centre Mathew Tait and scrum half Paul Hodgson. The squad looks in top form as it contains the veteran Borthwick this season. The players who qualified to the elite team include scrum half Ben Young, Flanker Hendrie Fourie, prop Paul Doran Jones and centre Dominic Waldouck. Also there are rumours of centre Mike Tindall joining the squad along with veterans Joe Worsley and George Chunter. Tindall will be joining the team after displaying some amazing performance in the test series. England V New Zealand Hospitality Martin Johnson commented that lot of players are struggling to make their way in the team and are showing some extraordinary results. Johnson said that he felt sorry for leaving Borthwick and some other veteran players out of the squad as currently they are selecting the best possible team. Lot of the rookies that have entered the squad were given chances by Johnson to prove themselves in different matches. Borthwick after the decision said that even though he is not happy with the decision but still he is confident that he will make his way back into the squad. Borthwick joined the international team in 2000 and capped 57 matches for England. During his career as captain Borthwick faced much criticism but somehow every time he managed to counter them. Johnson will take his selected elite squad for a pre-season training session for about a week on 8th August. The team will compete against Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Samoa in four autumn Tests at Twickenham. It is yet to be seen how Johnson’s new elite team will play against the top teams during the test session.
